Advanced Radiation Therapy using Rapid Arc Technology for Cancer treatment now available in KIMS

The KIMS Pinnacle Comprehensive Cancer Center has become
the first center in the state to employ Rapid Arc with IGRT technology in treatment of cancer patients. The newly introduced cancer care division at KIMS Hospital successfully began radiation therapy using Rapid Arc technology on a patient, who is a case of prostrate cancer.

Rapid Arc delivers a highly precise treatment much faster than other technologies. Treatments that once took 15-30 minutes can sometimes be accomplished in as little as a single rotation of the machine around the patient, that is, in about 2 minutes!

The positive result for the patient is a faster treatment time and less scattering of the radiation outside the tumor into healthy tissues. This technology can even improve outcomes for cancers such as those of the prostatebrainhead and neck, as well as many others. A fast, precise Rapid Arc treatment takes 80% less time. Patients can be in and out of treatment quickly and return to their daily routine.

Olympic Medal Winner Regains Life at KIMS Hospital
The sportsman who ruled Nigerian athletics for almost a decade was left bed ridden after a recent training accident. Olympic medal winner Sunday Bada, had not only broken the bones in his arm and leg, but was also left with broken dreams when he arrived to the capital. Now after his treatment at KIMS, he is back on the track of life with regained confidence of returning to the sports world.

Sunday Bada had specialized in the 400 metres event and had won three medals at the World Indoor Championships, including a gold medal in 1997. He was also a part of the Nigerian team that won the silver medal in 4 x 400 metres relay at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. The retired Nigerian sprinter was later appointed Technical Director of the Nigerian Athletic federation. Whilst working there, he met with an accident during a training program. A failed attempt at performing a jump from one building to another, left his bones shattered and also his dreams. The bones in his right arm and leg were broken, and doctors in his home country had advised him to sleep on a wooden cot. He was told that there was no other treatment and that he may go abroad to seek the same. He is now seeing hope through the eyes of the specialists at KIMS Hospital. From watching him suffer in unbearable pain, it was his friend who unhesitatingly brought Mr. Bada to KIMS Hospital. The former athlete was treated by Dr. Muhammed Nazeer – Coordinator, Department of Orthopedics at KIMS Hospital. The Doctor’s expertise has paid off and is now helping Bada in taking the baby steps back to life. Bada plans to stay in a private resort and following a week’s observation, he will return to Nigeria. A gleam of happiness and relief is now evident in his wife’s eyes as well. As Technical Director of the Nigerian Athletics Federation, Bada's next aim is to prepare his national team for the New Delhi commonwealth games. When he returns to India, he plans to visit KIMS again for his follow up treatment. “India is very much ahead in the field of sports medicine and if African nations co-operate, the athletes in these nations will stand to gain a lot”, said Bada and agreed Dr. M I Sahadulla, Chairman & Managing Director of KIMS Hospital.
